#113. Morihei Ueshiba: Summit of Love replied by TravisE @ Fri, 18 Apr 2008 23:00:50 -0000

So true! One of the teachers I really admire is John Sherman. He offers self-inquiry as given by Ramana Maharshi. One of John’s practices is to not discuss way-points, markers, or stages of the path as much as possible. He feels that the way you get to the truth of what you are is not important, and that sharing revelations from along the way can be distracting as it causes others to strive for the same markers as proof of the authenticity of their experience. That is, of course, preposterous. We are all already what we are looking for. We have been told that for thousands of years. Veering my path to try and make it match someone else’s is a useless activity, and nothing but postponement. As long as we look at ourselves we will find this summit. How we get there is immaterial.

Thanks for this reminder. The Art of Peace is one of the few books I have read more than once. In fact, I destroyed my first copy through frequent reading, and am onto my second.

#78. Quit Worrying About What Others Think replied by TravisE @ Mon, 10 Mar 2008 20:12:45 -0000

We did an exercise when I attended the Forum that drove this deeply home for me. They called it the fear exercise. Basically what you outlined, with the emphasis being on how you walk through life afraid of basically everyone, even your closest loved ones. As the group of ~150 attendants slowly got/admitted to themselves the awful truth the sobs began. Soon enough the whole room was in tears. Then we got called to let go of that visualization and breathe for a bit. The next phase was as simple as you put it, “Now, picture those people again and think about what they are seeing in you.” In short order a release of explosive laughter was bouncing off the walls. They were more heavy handed about the whole thing, but still it was terribly effective, and a lesson I will never forget.

This plays into the whole “No man is an island” thing. Our interconnectedness and interdependence is obvious and unavoidable. I was in a heated debate with a friend once who was going through a rough patch. He stubbornly claimed, “I am a separate, unique being. I am an island!”, to which I replied, “Made those pants yourself did you?” He is no seamstress… ;-)

For me the standard use of the term “responsible” is a container for guilt, or an excuse for the assignment of guilt and inherently looks to the past.

The term “response-able” is looking to the future, and is a container of strength, wisdom and possibility.

I don’t think the purpose of the Integral Model (and this subset of Spiral Dynamics theory) is to escape anything. I can embrace the fact that there are echoes of “I am right!” left from older structural stages, and still function from a place outside of that assumption. The quickest way to letting go of my past would be severe head trauma. But, letting go of the past is not the point. We all come up through these stages and each is not a matter of surpass and ignore lower levels, but is rather transcend and include. We negate the tendency of “I am right!” we all come up through not by getting rid of it, or ignoring it, but including it and acting without its influence. As much as such a thing is possible.
