#175. Joseph Campbell: Hero's Forest replied by waltww @ Tue, 17 Jun 2008 01:04:00 -0000

I’ll call this a test as my replies have not been accepted for over a week by the system.

Joseph Campbell is my number 2 hero and mentor. He woke me up years ago with his TV progam about Myths with Bill Moyer’s interviewing him. As a result I have read his biography and many of his favorite books including his own edited version of Carl Jung’s writings. But one of his favorites was the Upanishads. And I listened to the audio book version of his The Hero of a Thousand Faces. I mention all this to show how much I respect Campbell. Even though I admire him greatly I strongly believe there is little worry that I will follow anyone else’s life path. For as soon as I start understanding my personal experiences I begin my very own set of experiences that are unique to me. Perhaps my heros show me the general way out of the forest but they don’t ever determine my individual steps along the way.

“You enter the forest at the darkest point, where there is no path.

Where there is a way or a path, it is someone else’s path. You are not on your own path.

If you follow someone else’s way, you are not going to realize your potential.”

~ Joseph Campbell, 20th Century Philosopher & Mythology Expert

from A Joseph Campbell Companion: Reflections on the Art of Living

That pretty much sums it up.

Are you following someone else’s path? If so, you aren’t going to realize your potential.

Engage in your hero’s journey!

Find your own way.
