"The great epochs of our life come when we gain the courage to rechristen our evil as what is best in us." ~ Friedrich Nietzsche, 19th century German philosopher from Beyond Good and Evil: Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future How's that for a challenge? What evil do you need to rechristen? Here's to the next great epoch of our lives. |

I confess this quote goes right by me. I just don’t get it. I spent time researching the statement from sources on the Internet but mostly found statements that seemed to tell me how wise it was without giving me a hint as to what it really meant. Then I came across a nine page tirade on the wrongs of our society that seemed to center on this statement and still I wasn’t able to get its meaning. By the way that paper New Game Rules by Michael Sharpe seems to have a lot of truth even though it is somewhat scarey challenging so much of our way of life today. I’m hoping, especially since this is billed as a forum that someone will clarify for me what Nietzsche meant by this statement in his book Beyond Good and Evil, which I have had on my shelf for years without reading or should I say without really understanding. A little help here please. Thanks. |
